1. What is 10 Digit Dialing?

Answer: 10 Digit Dialing requires the area code and 7 digit number to call a local number. (Example:  to call Hamilton Telecommunications you will need to dial 402 694-5101.) 


                For an emergency, just dial 911.


2. When does the 10 Digit Dialing change go into affect?

Answer: Effective June 26, 2010, you will need to begin using the new 10 digit dialing for all local calls.  Beginning February 26, 2011 it will be mandatory.  


3. How do I make a long distance call? 

Answer: To place a long distance call you will need to dial
1 + area code + 7-digit telephone number.


4.  Why is this happening?

Answer: The Nebraska Public Service Commission (NPSC) has approved the addition of the new 531 area code to accommodate the growing need for telephone numbers in Nebraska. Starting March 26, 2011, new telephone lines or service may be assigned numbers with the new 531 area code.


5. What should I do to prepare for this dialing change?

Answer:  You should reprogram all stored local telephone numbers to include the area code, including your dial up internet connections, fax machines, speed dialing, modems, wireless phone, or any equipment with automatic dialing features.  Also, check your web sites, business stationery, advertising materials, personal checks, contact information, and your ID tags to ensure the area code is included.
